Insects in jewelry

In a friendly tone

They buzz, crawl, and fly around us, but we rarely think of them as jewelry…
scarabs, dragonflies, and butterflies – jewelry insects are not subject to the laws of nature!
They can be used to decorate brooches, earrings, pendants, or bracelets. The range of possibilities is enormous. The most popular insects in jewelry are scarabs and dragonflies, and it is them that I will take a closer look at in today’s entry.

A long history of insect jewelry

Insect jewelry is an old tradition that has been preserved throughout history. Insects have been used as jewelry since ancient times, sometimes even as amulets. Already in ancient Egypt, one of the most popular motifs was the scarab. The most famous example is the cartouche ring of the pharaohs – a ring with a carved scarab beetle. It was believed that this insect would bring good luck to the owner.

Beetles, spiders, and dragonflies were prevalent in the second half of the 19th century and later in Art Nouveau (indeed, some of you know Art Nouveau dragonflies, richly decorated with stones). Today, they are an increasingly popular form of decoration, especially among young people.

Insects have always been associated with man’s inner world: they are animals that have fascinated humans since time immemorial, they can be found almost everywhere on earth and they have many different life cycles and forms of behavior.

They are also very diverse in appearance: their colors vary from green to red or blue, their shapes are very different, and they can be very small or huge (the most significant known beetle weighs around 3 kg).

Scarab – holy beetle

Beetles have always been considered lucky charms. In ancient Egypt, a scarab beetle was used as a symbol of life and rebirth. The Egyptians believed that when the sun-god Ra set in the west each evening, he would transform into a scarab beetle and travel through the underworld during the night to be reborn in the east at dawn.

Scarabs were used as amulets for protection against evil spirits and disease. They were also worn as jewelry by both men and women. Some scarabs were made of stone or glass, while others were made from precious metals like gold or silver.

Today, you can find many Egyptian scarabs made of stone, glass, or precious metals such as gold or silver. But in our online boutique, you will find beautiful earrings with a scarab motif and fabulous necklaces.

Dragonfly: symbol of change

The dragonfly has broad symbolism, which varies significantly depending on the culture. Its primary meaning is immortality.

Because of its life cycle, like butterflies, it symbolizes change and transformation. It is associated with water. Because of its extraordinary agility and ability to move in all directions, it signifies activity and energy. In many countries, it has symbolized prosperity, following one’s dreams, happiness, and good fortune.

In recent years dragonfly earrings in various colors have become very popular, also available from us.

Dragonflies are one of the most beautiful and delicate creatures on earth. Sometimes they land on you, which means good luck, happiness, and prosperity.
